READING WITH INSIGHT >>>>>
l. Reflecting on the story, what did you feel about Evans’ having the last laugh?
Ans: Evans’ having the last laugh is the most enjoyable part of the story. The author does not tell us what the crime was for which Evans was in the prison. So the readers have no reason to have any particular ill-will against him. For them, it is a battle of with between the prisoner Evans and the prison authorities. In this battle Evans actually wins.
2. When Stephens comes back to the cell he Jumps to a conclusion and the whole machinery blindly goes by his assumption without even checking the identity of the injured ‘McLeery’. Does this show how hasty conjectures can prevent one from seeing the obvious? How is the criminal able to predict such negligence?
Ans: There is no doubt that Evans escape from the prison is the result of Stephens reading a hasty conjecture. It is indeed true that hasty conjectures can prevent us from seeing the obvious Evans predicts that such negligence will keep on happening because after all it is a battle of wits. Both, the criminal and the police try their own plans. The clever one succeeds.
3) What could the Governor have done to securely bring back ' Evans to prison when he caught him at the Golden Lion? Does that final act of foolishness really prove that “he was just another good-for-a-giggle, gullible governor, that was all”?
Ans: The Governor could have checked the prison officer and the van before handing Evans to that officer. He didn’t do so not because he was just another good-for-agiggle gullible governor but because once again he failed to judge how clever Evans could be. He had told Evans that there were policemen all around the hotel, which was false. On the other hand there were friends of Evans all around who kept a tight vigil on every happening around. They not only successfully spotted the trouble but took a timely action to nip that trouble in the bud.
Governor was certainly feeling very smug after recapturing Evans and so he wouldn’t think that Evans could escape yet again and so quickly.
4) While we condemn the crime, we are sympathetic to the criminal. Is this the reason why prison staff often develop a soft comer
for those in custody?
Ans:It is indeed human nature that which we condemn the crime, we do not always hate the criminal with the passage of the time, we forget the crime but the criminal remains before our eyes. Slowly but certainly, we begin to sympathise with him. More often than not we begin to feel pity for his sufferings. We want to be sure that he is not being made to suffer more than he should. That was the reason why the Governor asked Stephens to come out of Evans’ cell when he was pretending to appear for an examination.
In fact it was not just the Governor but the whole prison staff which at times showed softness toward Evans. For example, Jackson but Evans, wear his cap ‘which he had earlier asked to be taken off. Not only that, he wishes him good luck for the examination.
5) Do you agree that between crime and punishment it is mainly a battle of wits?
Ans: That between crime and punishment it is mainly a battle of its is indeed the theme of the story. It all begins with Evans when he wants take O-level examination in German. Now the Governor knew that he had already escaped from the prison three times, that he was called ‘Evans the Break’, still the Governor was confident that nothing would happen if he was allowed to take the test. It was indeed preparing for a battle of with against Evans.
However Evans escaped . The Governor used his wits much better and recaptured him. He thought he had won the final battle. But Evans had the last laugh when he esca ed once again.
